5 Places to Visit When in Accra, Ghana

When Cassie and I were in Ghana, we tried to do as many tourist-y things as possible and visit as many places in Accra as we could in 2 full days. Now, you’re not going to find anything about Ghana jollof or food in this post because either the one place we tried it were having a bad day on that particular day or it’s just not worth talking about, you choose. These places were my absolute favorites, we visited other places you might not find on this list but must have seen if you follow me on Instagram

1.) Independence Square

Also known as The Black Star Square, it is famous for being the second largest city square in the world. Funny story, we got here after having a long, tiring day, we wanted to take our pictures and go but we stumbled on a group of Ghanaians having a photoshoot, after going back and forth, they agreed to vacate a spot for us if we granted them a few minutes. We gave them over an hour and ended up taking pictures with an overly flirty man by their official photographer.

2.) Makola Market

This is one of the popular markets in Accra and it is very similar to Balogun market in Lagos. But unlike Balogun market, you don’t have traders pulling and tugging you to buy their wares or calling you colorful names. As expected, some of the items were unreasonably overpriced, perhaps because it was written on our foreheads that we were foreigners, I’ll never know. We managed to score a few items and always had to convert the prices to Naira and compare with prices back home to know if we were getting a good deal or not.

3.) Fishing Village, Jamestown

We initially went to Jamestown because of the magnificent Lighthouse but upon our arrival, we met a nice tour guide who just happened to be my namesake, he offered to take us round the fishing village in Jamestown. The fishing village is made up of close knit families on a large expanse of sea front, the common language in the  area is Ga, we learnt a few words I can barely remember now but it was a fun experience.

4.) Arts Centre

We came across this place while going through a magazine at the hotel and after asking the receptionist for directions, we made a trip there. It’s similar to the Lekki arts & craft market, you get to choose from different art pieces made of wood, leather and fabric. You could peruse the items or buy a few pieces as souvenirs for family and friends back home which I did.

5.) The Republic Bar, Osu

If you’re looking to explore nightlife in Accra, this is a good place to start. It’s a typical bar with an outside seating arrangement, the interior of the bar is filled with different memorabilia ranging from the old coal iron to pictures of the late Fela Kuti. They’re big on Nigerian music here and in no time, you would find yourself moving to one or two familiar beats. The drinks are decently priced and if you’re lucky, you’ll catch them on one of their karaoke nights or enjoy a live performance by popular Ghanaian artistes
