4 Reasons To Wear Sunscreen || Product Review: SunBum Sunscreen

You’ve probably heard/read about the reasons why you should wear sunscreen and gone right ahead to disregard the information especially if you have dark skin, just like me. It took a bit of convincing and my making the decision to cultivate a good skin care habit to finally start using sunscreen. Hopefully, I’ll be able to do a collage of photos when I’m in my 50s with the popular #BlackDontCrack tag.

For newbies, choosing the right sunscreen can seem like a difficult task especially when you have a wide range of SPF to choose from. Here’s a basic breakdown; SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and measures how long a sunscreen would protect you from UltraViolet (UV) B rays. The best kind of sunscreen to use is one that has “broad spectrum protection“, it protects you from both UVB and UVA rays so you get double protection. Typically, it’s best to use sunscreen with SPF between 30 – 50, any SPF lower than 30 might not be offering you good protection.

Physical Vs. Chemical Sunscreens

Physical sunscreens are also known as sunblock and like the name implies, they create a physical barrier on the skin that prevents UV rays from getting past. Most sunscreens that sit atop the skin and leave a white cast are physical sunscreens with Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide as the primary ingredient.

On the other hand, chemical sunscreens contain chemical compounds like avobenzone, oxybenzone, octisalate, and octinosate that change UV rays to heat which is then emitted from the skin. It is best to apply them at least 15 minutes before going outside.

 Reasons To Wear Sunscreen

1.) Due to its protective factor, wearing sunscreen daily decreases your risk of developing skin cancer.

2.) Sunscreen helps prevent premature wrinkles and slows down the aging process.

3.) Wearing sunscreen helps with an even skin tone and prevents facial discolorations that are caused by sun damage,

4.) Sunscreen enhances the health of your skin by ensuring your collagens and essential proteins that keep your skin looking healthy are well protected.

SunBum Sunscreen

SunBum SPF 50 Review

Ingredients – Avobenzone 3.00%, Homosalate 5.00%, Octisalate 3.00%, Octocrylene 10.00%, Water, Butyloctyl Salicylate, Hydrated Silica, VP/Hexadecene Copolymer, Styrene/Acrylates Copolymer, Dimethicone, Polyester-8, Caprylyl Methicone, Ethylhexyl Stearate, Trideceth-6, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Fragrance, Sodium Polyacrylate, Behenyl Alcohol, Dimethyl Capramide, Ethylhexylglycerin, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Xanthan Gum, Polyaminopropyl Biguanide, Tocopheryl Acetate, BHT, Disodium EDTA, Methylisothiazolinone.

The first thing that attracted me to SunBum was its name and the motto “Trust The Bum” which it lives up to. Another thing is that this particular sunscreen protects against both UVB and UVA rays.

It blends really well into the skin and doesn’t leave a white cast like some thick sunscreen lotions. It has a light floral scent that lingers. On colder days, I layer it with my Shea Moisture Hydrating Body Lotion.

Also worthy of note is that SunBum contains Vitamin E but doesn’t contain Zinc so if you react to Zinc, this might be a really good choice of sunscreen for you. However, it has Avobenzone and Octisalate as its primary active ingredients making it a chemical sunscreen.

Product Review: Rose Water & Tea Tree Facial Toner by Desire Natural Luxury

Rose Water has easily become a staple in my skincare regimen alongside Rosehip oil. When I got this one by Desire Natural Luxury; a made in Nigeria brand that specializes in organic hair and skincare, I was quite excited to try it out because I barely had five pumps left from my old Rosewater. The most shocking thing about this product is it’s price, my old bottle of Rosewater cost me twice the price of this one from Desire Natural Luxury and this one works just as well.

PRODUCT REVIEW: Simply Organic Argan Oil

Argan oil is one of my top 2 favorite oils, the other is Rosehip Oil. My first experience with  Argan oil was when I used the Creme of Nature hair dye and they had those sweet smelling overprocessed argan oils in the cute vials. A year later I bought original Argan oil and my disappointment when I found out it wasn’t sweet smelling was palpable.

Fast forward almost 3 years later and there are so many available products made in Nigeria by Nigerians for Nigerians, it doesn’t get any better than that really. In no particular order, here are my 5 Nigerian hair care brands you should know about;

Mara Cruiz Organics is a Nigerian owned brand that specializes in producing natural products for hair and skin care. I was fortunate to receive their entire adult hair care range for my personal use and another set to gift a lucky person who would be able to share my experience. The first thing that endeared me to this brand is the affordability and lovely smell! A lot of people I’ve come across are always eager to try indigenous brands but then get put off by the ridiculous prices. The ingredients for each products are safe for natural hair and to prevent this post from being tiresome, I’ve included links to view the complete list of ingredients for each product.
