4 Reasons To Wear Sunscreen || Product Review: SunBum Sunscreen

You’ve probably heard/read about the reasons why you should wear sunscreen and gone right ahead to disregard the information especially if you have dark skin, just like me. It took a bit of convincing and my making the decision to cultivate a good skin care habit to finally start using sunscreen. Hopefully, I’ll be able to do a collage of photos when I’m in my 50s with the popular #BlackDontCrack tag.

For newbies, choosing the right sunscreen can seem like a difficult task especially when you have a wide range of SPF to choose from. Here’s a basic breakdown; SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and measures how long a sunscreen would protect you from UltraViolet (UV) B rays. The best kind of sunscreen to use is one that has “broad spectrum protection“, it protects you from both UVB and UVA rays so you get double protection. Typically, it’s best to use sunscreen with SPF between 30 – 50, any SPF lower than 30 might not be offering you good protection.

Sunscreen

Physical Vs. Chemical Sunscreens

Physical sunscreens are also known as sunblock and like the name implies, they create a physical barrier on the skin that prevents UV rays from getting past. Most sunscreens that sit atop the skin and leave a white cast are physical sunscreens with Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide as the primary ingredient.

On the other hand, chemical sunscreens contain chemical compounds like avobenzone, oxybenzone, octisalate, and octinosate that change UV rays to heat which is then emitted from the skin. It is best to apply them at least 15 minutes before going outside.

 Reasons To Wear Sunscreen

1.) Due to its protective factor, wearing sunscreen daily decreases your risk of developing skin cancer.

2.) Sunscreen helps prevent premature wrinkles and slows down the aging process.

3.) Wearing sunscreen helps with an even skin tone and prevents facial discolorations that are caused by sun damage,

4.) Sunscreen enhances the health of your skin by ensuring your collagens and essential proteins that keep your skin looking healthy are well protected.

SunBumSunscreen

The first thing that attracted me to SunBum was its name and the motto “Trust The Bum” which it lives up to. Another thing is that this particular sunscreen protects against both UVB and UVA rays.

It blends really well into the skin and doesn’t leave a white cast like some thick sunscreen lotions. It has a light floral scent that lingers. On colder days, I layer it with my Shea Moisture Hydrating Body Lotion.

Also worthy of note is that SunBum contains Vitamin E but doesn’t contain Zinc so if you react to Zinc, this might be a really good choice of sunscreen for you. However, it has Avobenzone and Octisalate as its primary active ingredients making it a chemical sunscreen.

  1. I looked all around Lagos for a good moistuting lotion with proper SPF (side eye to vaseline with their spf 10 🙄) and all I could find was Eucerin, so I got it. I’m going to camp so I must not burn please.
I’m hoping it provides me with the protection I need because 2019 is the year of the glow!
