Day Trip To Olumo Rock in Abeokuta, Ogun State

Last December, I went on a group trip organized by Jadesola of The Bourgie Life to visit the renowned Olumo Rock. Now if you had your primary and/or secondary/high school education in Nigeria, chances are you’ve been to Olumo Rock on one of those organized school excursions. I went while in Secondary School too and honestly, both experiences are incomparable.

The journey to Olumo Rock was a three-hour drive from Lagos and we played games to keep us occupied throughout the ride. A large overhead sign welcomes visitors at the entrance where there’s a fee of One Thousand Naira. It was sad but not surprising to note that what is supposed to be a top tourist attraction is in not-so-top condition anymore, the lifts do not work so everyone has to use the man-made steps, hike and use ladders at different points.

Overall, I enjoyed the experience and I’ve decided to be intentional about traveling within my budget while maintaining the financial goals I mentioned in this post and so far, I’ve been able to meet my monthly saving goals with the help of Cowry Wise. At the beginning of the year, I did a rough estimate of the total amount I would need for travel this year and every month, I set aside small amounts using Cowry Wise. Right now, I have saved just enough for my next trip in June.

Fun Facts About Olumo Rock

It was used as a fortress by the Egba people during wars and communal clashes.
It stands at 137 meters above sea level.
There are shrines and priestesses who live on the rock.
There have been no falls or injuries recorded on the rock.
On a part of the rock, there is flowing water that is believed to have medicinal properties that cure many illnesses.
Traditional worshippers pray to the trees on the rock for protection.
