How To Care For Wigs

I get the “how do I take care of my wigs?” question a lot so I decided to finally put this out. Hopefully, it answers your questions concerning wig care and is as helpful as it was to others I’ve given a summary of this.

WASHING

• Place your wig on a wig stand (If you do not own a wig stand, you can move on to the remaining steps).
• Gently brush and detangle the wig.
• Part the wig into sections (preferably 4) and hold in place with butterfly clips/clamps.
• Apply shampoo to the sections and rinse wig under a running tap/shower.
• Still working in sections, apply conditioner and comb it through the hair then rinse after 15 minutes.
• Leave wig to air dry or use a blow dryer on low heat,
• Turn the wig inside-out after some time and allow to air dry or use the blow dryer to dry the inner part of the wig.

Allowing the inner part of the wig to dry is the most important step in this process. I recommend using a blow dryer to make sure you reach every nook and cranny. You don’t want to be stuck with a damp inner that later becomes a breeding ground for mould, germs and nasty odors.

STYLING

The great thing about wigs is that you do not necessarily have to brush or style them daily, especially if you get certain styles like the braids wig or short hair styles. For wigs that require the use of heat styling tools, always use a heat protectant. Basically, treat your wigs with the same care you would normally give your natural hair if you want them to serve you for a long period of time.

STORING

A wig stand is always a great investment as it helps to maintain the shape of your wig. However, if you do not own one, you can neatly place your wigs in the storage boxes they come with or a breathable fabric packaging.
