It’s easy to neglect taking care of our hair tools and depending on how often you use them, product buildup could lead to the accumulation of dirt and germs that have harmful effects to your hair. The frequency with which you use your hair tools would determine how often you need to wash and clean them. Personally, I choose a day of the week to do that.
Combs & Brushes
- Remove hairs and other materials on the brush/comb with the use of a long thin material (e.g, the end of a rat tail comb, toothpick).
- Fill up your sink or a bowl with warm water and add some shampoo.
- Let it soak for a bit.
- Use an old to gently clean the soaked brush/comb.
- Rinse and place on a clean surface to dry.
Note: Do not soak metal combs/brushes, use a soft cleaning cloth and an alcohol rub to get rid of dirt.
This includes your head clips, bands, ties, scrunchies, e.t.c. Soak them in a bowl of warm water with shampoo and rub against each other, rinse and place on a clean surface to dry.
Curlers, Flat-irons and Blowdryers
It’s easy to get product build-up on heat styling tools from heat protectant and oils, this buildup eventually attracts dust and other dirt.
- Make sure the styling tool is unplugged.
- Dampen a cleaning cloth with a mix of water and shampoo
- Use the cloth to wipe the tool
- Allow to airdry.
- Use a clean cloth and rubbing alcohol to wipe and get rid of dirt.

thanks for the care tip….would repent from neglecting my hair tools.
Good tips. I’m always so lazy to clean my brushes. But I think I’ll do that this weekend. Thanks for sharing xx
Reblogged this on The Budget Bella and commented:
Oh well….. I never used to pay attention to washing hair brushes..
I take off the hairs in them and clean with a menthylated spirit, till we meet again.😂😂 Here’s what Alex of nappyhaired has to say about cleaning hair tools and accessories.
You all should check out her blog as well…..
Have a fabulous weekend
This is so smart! This is honestly the last thing I think of doing… I don’t use my heat on my hair often, but I really need to take a good alcohol rub down to my flat iron…
I believe I’m guilty of neglect . What I basically do is clean my comb after use and not thoroughly just some wipes her and there till next time we meet again. Now I know better thanks Alex.
LOL That used to be me. You’re welcome!
I hardly wash my hair accessories – maybe because I don’t use them that often.
Should try to wash them often now. Thanks for the tips!
I’m not sure I even own hair accessories anymore, you’re welcome!

She cleans them for free or? Let me know if I want to be your new hairdresser
